Covering an area of approximately 143,000 square miles, the Pantanal is the largest floodplain in the Americas. Although it is often confused with a marsh, the area is unique in the world. It is the multitude of landscapes that makes the Pantanal so unique. Savanna lowlands, floodplains and forests are influenced by the Amazon Rainforest, as well as by the scrublands of the Caatinga, making for a vast mixture of ecosystems.
